LACNIC and REGULATEL Sign Agreement to Strengthen Cooperation on Internet Governance

LACNIC and the Latin American Forum of Telecommunications Regulators (REGULATEL) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen institutional cooperation and promote joint initiatives regarding the governance and development of the Internet ecosystem in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The agreement, which establishes a collaborative framework for the exchange of experiences, knowledge, and information between the two organizations, was announced yesterday during a dialogue session between representatives and members of REGULATEL and LACNIC at the "Casa de Internet de Latinoamérica y el Caribe" (Internet House for Latin America and the Caribbean) in Montevideo, Uruguay. The announcement was attended by Ernesto Majó, CEO of LACNIC, and Desirée Logroño, Acting President of REGULATEL.
Key areas of focus include strengthening Internet governance, expanding connectivity, narrowing the digital divide, as well as the implementation and adoption of IPv6 and the development of Internet Exchange Points (IXPs).

The memorandum also provides for the promotion of initiatives of common interest and the development of institutional and academic cooperation efforts aimed at capacity building within REGULATEL member countries, including participation in their working groups.
REGULATEL is a multilateral cooperation forum that brings together regulatory bodies and telecommunications authorities from Latin America, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. LACNIC is the Regional Internet Registry responsible for the allocation and management of Internet number resources for Latin America and the Caribbean, operating through policies developed via open, participatory, and consensus-based processes within the regional community.
Through this memorandum, both organizations express their commitment to deepening their cooperative ties and pooling their capabilities to advance initiatives that contribute to the development of the Internet in the region.
